House Democrats are asking Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to set aside President Trump’s $450 million border wall project, directly urging him to abandon the military-funded barrier in the state of Arizona.
Representative Adam Smith (D-WA) sent a salty letter to Mattis this week, declaring the proposal “utterly irresponsible” and a move that would directly impact “military readiness and infrastructure.”
“It is utterly irresponsible and appalling that President Trump wants to take away funding for military readiness and infrastructure in order to spend it on his border wall,” Smith said in a statement. “We are trying to ensure that our men and women in uniform have the facilities and training they need to face serious dangers while defending our country. If Secretary Mattis follows through on this request, it would undermine those efforts.”
Statements like that deserve not just a chuckle brought forth by a tickle in the back of the throat, but a full-blown gut-busting laugh out loud right in the Congressman’s face.
So, it took a border wall for Democrats to begin caring about the military?
The proposal would build a 31-mile fence along a section of Air Force Base Barry M. Goldwater which sits on Arizona’s border with Mexico. That’s in Phoenix.
If any part of our border needs a secure border wall, or a similar type of barrier, with constant patrolling, it’s Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix is the kidnapping capital of the United States, with more incidents than any other city in the world outside of Mexico City with over 370 cases in 2008 alone.
How can this be? Because people who work for the cartels and bring their poisons into the United States through the Phoenix border are told that they either bring back the money or the product, or else their entire family will be murdered. Rival Mexican gangs are known to ambush cartel mules and steal the product they’re carrying. Say they have $300,000 of product stolen, they know they have to bring back home either the money or the product, so they kidnap three Americans and ransom them for about $100,000 each. This has been going on for some time now, and a really good way of controlling the free flow of cartel drugs is to build a wall and patrol it 24/7.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced in April that the agency was looking into ways the military could help complete Trump’s wall, which has been stymied by lack of funding from Capitol Hill.
“We’re going to have our wall, and we’re going to get it very strongly. The military’s going to be building some of it,” Trump said earlier this year.
