The Department of Defense is reviewing options for border wall construction along the US-Mexico border, as they prepare an eventual game-plan should President Donald Trump declare a “national emergency” for the region.

“The Department of Defense is reviewing available authorities and funding mechanisms to identify options to enable border barrier construction,” said Navy Capt. Bill Speaks, a Pentagon spokesman.   “As there has not been such a declaration made, it would be inappropriate to comment further on those efforts.”

President Trump landed in Texas Thursday to meet with local officials and federal agents with first-hand knowledge of the escalating crisis along the US-Mexico border.

Trump’s declaration of an emergency at the southern border would allow the Army Corps of Engineers to design barriers and allow contractors to build them. Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, who commands the corps, accompanied Trump on his trip Thursday to tour the border in Texas.

Trump signaled on Thursday that since his negotiation attempts with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are falling apart, the declaration of a national emergency could happen at any time.

The president has tried numerous times to work out a deal with the Democrats, even staying at the White House during the Christmas holidays while Pelosi went on vacation to a luxury resort in Hawaii during the partial government shutdown.  Democrats will not budge for political reasons.  Both Pelosi and Schumer have supported border security, including a barrier wall, as recently as less than one year ago, but now they believe not building a wall will harm Trump in his 2020 bid for re-election, being that a border wall was his signature campaign promise.  Leave it to Democrats to politicize our national security.  For those reasons, the president feels he may have to act on his own by declaring a national emergency.  Every one of the last four of six presidents have declared national emergencies for problems less than the death and destruction we face today by open borders, yet the Democrats will go judge-shopping and find an activist liberal on the bench who will rule that though all past presidents have had the authority to declare a national emergency, Donald Trump may not.  Just wait for it, because you know it’s coming.

“If this doesn’t work out, probably I will do it – I would almost say definitely,” Trump said. “We have plenty of funds if there’s a national emergency.”

The Democrat talking point recently has been that there is no national emergency and that the border situation is a “manufactured crisis,” manufactured by the president.  However, the numbers are saying that we lose 300 Americans each week to drug overdoses, and that 90 percent of the drugs are coming up through the southern border, and that between 2017 and 2018 there have been over 100,000 assaults on American citizens by illegal aliens, over 30,000 sexual assaults, and over 4,000 homicides, all committed by illegals who shouldn’t be here in the first place.  These kinds of numbers are the reason most Americans are siding with Trump and don’t believe it to be a manufactured crisis.
