I have a “human right” to your wallet, according to Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). Obrador is the leading candidate to win the presidency of Mexico. He is suffering from delusions of grandeur. Doesn’t he realize that President Trump is holding all the cards, and he doesn’t need Congress to play them? Do any of you know what item brings in more money than any other to Mexico? Remittances. That’s money Mexicans living in the USA send back to Mexico. In 2016 remittances totaled $27 billion dollars. President Trump can put a hold on that by Executive Order. He can also drop out of NAFTA. Mexico’s fragile economy could not stand it if President Trump were to take those steps.
Mexican presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) called for mass immigration to the United States during a speech Tuesday declaring it a “human right” for all North Americans.
“And soon, very soon — after the victory of our movement — we will defend all the migrants in the American continent and all the migrants in the world,” Obrador said, adding that immigrants “must leave their towns and find a life in the United States.”
He then declared it as “a human right we will defend,” eluniversal.com reports.
While the election is not until July 1, Obrador is by far the frontrunner.
Mexico has facilitated illegal aliens from Central and South America before, but if Obrador decides to go through with his threats, his country could pay a huge price. Just the remittances alone would wipe out a nice little chunk of their GDP to the tune of just over 1 trillion dollars a year. President Trump holds all the cards, but Obrador is a massive progressive populist, and as a member of the ruling class won’t feel the same debilitating effects as the average Mexican citizen.
It never pays to threaten the United States.
