California leadership seems to be fighting to become the land of the fruitcakes and the nuts.
In Oakland, California the mayor warned criminal illegal immigrants of a pending ICE raid, and a coffee shop refuses service to uniformed police.
Oakland is now the Loony Left Capital of the country, beating out San Francisco for the title.
The coffee shop, Hasta Muerte Coffee, which in Spanish means “Toward Death”, is refusing to serve police officers who come into the shop in uniform. Apparently they’re doing this to show concern for the “physical and emotional safety of our customers and ourselves.” Please.
Coffee shops across America love it when cops show up in their establishments because their customers appreciate the sense of security if brings. Not at Hasta Muerte Coffee, who tells local police to hit the road.
Liberals haven’t yet championed the creeps at Hasta Muerte Coffee for dissing cops, and maybe that’s because they know that California laws require businesses to serve the public without regard to race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
Last month Robert Trevino, a Hispanic police sergeant, was refused service, and ironically, he happens to be the president of the Latino Police Officers Association of Alameda County.
From National Review:
“We need the support of the actual community to keep this place safe, not police. Especially in an area faced by drug sales and abuse, homelessness, and toxic masculinity as we see here on this block.”
The Hasta Muerte owners weren’t done by a long shot. Writing about the Oakland Police Department, they went on:
OPD’s recent attempts to enlist officers of color and its short term touting of fewer officer involved shootings does not reverse or mend its history of corruption, mismanagement, and scandal, nor a legacy of blatant repression. The facts are that poc [people of color], women, and queer police are complicit in upholding the same law and order that routinely criminalizes and terrorizes black and brown and poor folks, especially youth, trans, and houseless folks. For these reasons and so many more, we need the support of the actual community to keep this place safe, not police.
To their credit the Oakland police handled the provocation with incredible restraint.
Sergeant Bryan Hubbard, who runs the city police’s training academies, told the San Francisco Chronicle. “If they do call the police for any need, we’re going to respond professionally and give them the same level of service as anyone else regardless of their position.”
This is the second time in a month that Oakland has made headlines for outrageous leftist behavior. In February, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned illegal aliens that ICE was preparing a raid, possibly helping hundreds of criminal illegal aliens to evade arrest and deportation.
By publicly warning of ICE raids the kooky mayor put those federal officers into harms way.
Then we have Governor Moonbeam Jerry Brown’s declaration that California is now a sanctuary state, and that the state will not cooperate with federal law enforcement on matters of immigration laws.
This caused Jeff Sessions to sue the state of California.
“California, we have a problem,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a speech in Sacramento on Wednesday. “Here’s my message — how dare you. How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of our law enforcement officers to promote a radical, open-borders agenda.”
As an ideological punch in the face to California officials, Sessions went on to compare their defiance of immigration laws with the same type of “nullification” arguments that slave states made in the 1800s when they flouted the federal government on the issues of tariffs and slavery. Describing the role of federal law, Sessions quoted Article VI of the Constitution to the Golden State rebels:
There is no nullification. There is no secession. Federal law is “the supreme law of the land.” I would invite any doubters to go to Gettysburg, to the tombstones of John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln. This matter has been settled.
Governor Brown then accused Sessions of “initiating a reign of terror” on illegal immigrants in his state. That’s an incredible statement by the governor of a state where citizens are racked with huge costs for the large number of illegal aliens in the jurisdiction. I can’t remember another time when a governor compared enforcing immigration laws as a reign of terror.
California has serious problems, most of which could be solved over time, if the electorate stopped voting crazy people, who live in an alternate universe, into office who care more about illegal aliens than the citizens who pay for everything.
Liberal politicians are getting bolder every day. For now, they’re showing support for criminal illegal aliens over citizens, making a mockery of citizenship. It’s only a matter of time before they tire of the rule of law entirely and turn to policies of violence for whatever Progressive causes they happen to support at the moment. We have witnessed violence by Antifa and other leftist groups across America over the last decade. Can their leftist political leaders be that far behind?
