The organization recruited leading American journalists into a propaganda network to craft public perception through narratives favorable the CIA’s policy wants. It funded some student and cultural organizations and magazines as fronts.
As it developed, it also worked to influence foreign media and political campaigns, in addition to activities by other operating units of the CIA.
That was the Deep State then.
In 1975 Idaho Senator Frank Church chaired the United States Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities to better understand how pervasive into the lives of everyday Americans our intelligence agencies had become.
On August 17, 1975 Senator Frank Church appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press, and discussed the NSA, without mentioning it by name:
“In the need to develop a capacity to know what potential enemies are doing, the United States government has perfected a technological capability that enables us to monitor the messages that go through the air. (…) Now, that is necessary and important to the United States as we look abroad at enemies or potential enemies. We must know, at the same time, that capability at any time could be turned around on the American people, and no American would have any privacy left such is the capability to monitor everything—telephone conversations, telegrams, it doesn’t matter. There would be no place to hide.
“If this government ever became a tyranny, if a dictator ever took charge in this country, the technological capacity that the intelligence community has given the government could enable it to impose total tyranny, and there would be no way to fight back because the most careful effort to combine together in resistance to the government, no matter how privately it was done, is within the reach of the government to know. Such is the capability of this technology. (…)
“I don’t want to see this country ever go across the bridge. I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return”
Fast forward to 2009 and Manchurian President Barack Obama who had at his disposal the most sophisticated surveillance capabilities yet developed.
Coincidentally, Obama and members of his administration had the most adoring, non-confrontational, and defensive media, with the addition of the fawning censorship of social media America has yet seen.
Two years ago, FISA Court judge Rosemary Collyer released a 99-page report confirming massive FISA surveillance rules violations by the Obama intelligence community.
Judge Collyer was the presiding FISA judge and was the signatory for the court’s 99-page opinion written, April 2017, in the aftermath of the DOJ, FBI and NSA admissions to violating the FISA-702(16)(17) rules and procedures restricting spying on American citizens.
We also know that James Rosen, James Risen, and more than a dozen AP reporters and editors had been spied on. How many more would be identified were Congress, or the DOJ, do an exhaustive investigation absent political motives?
Of course, members of Congress are almost certain to have also been targets of unlawful surveillance in the search for their compromise.
Convince me of a different reason for this wholly unconstitutional impeachment and the appointment of the psychotic, pathological liar Adam Schiff to head the effort, every Democrat going along with it … and the mainstream propaganda media fawning over his every word.
