In recent weeks, the assumed president-elect Joe Biden has claimed that he wants Americans to “hear each other” and come together and heal after what has been a tumultuous year on the national scale. Upfront, this call for unity appears to be a positive step in the right direction.
But behind the scenes, Biden has appointed a man to a high position on his transition team that will launch an all-out assault on free speech that will only sow more division amongst Americans.
On November 13th, Biden hired Richard Stengel as his transition team leader for US-owned media outlets. Stengel has made it abundantly clear that he wants to redefine “freedom of speech” and make “hate speech” a crime.
The United Nations defines “hate speech” as “any kind of communication in speech, writing or behavior, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality,
race, color, descent, gender or other identity factor.”
Under this definition, hate speech is an admirable thing to eradicate. However, Stengel wants to take it a step further by fundamentally changing the First Amendment.
Stengel said has said that “the First Amendment protects the ‘thought that we hate,’ but it should not protect hateful speech that can cause violence by one group against another. In an age when everyone has a megaphone, that seems like a design flaw.”
While it is noble to want to eliminate hate speech, it is an impossible task. The price of every citizen having free speech is that some will use their voice foolishly, while others will use it wisely. But removing the right to free speech is not the solution, that just brings us closer to being a carbon copy of any socialist state in the past.
Furthermore, believing that government mandates on freedom of speech will completely eliminate all hate-filled speech is a faulty assumption. Men like Stengel have an agenda, and agendas change and evolve over time. So could their definition of what “hate speech” means, and that definition could become so extensive that Americans would be afraid to say anything.
If Stengel gets his wish, the government will have more control over your life in a way it was never intended to. Every American has the right to free speech, and the government should protect that right.
Don’t fall for Biden’s calls to “hear each other.” He wants to eradicate free speech, and Americans must be ready to fight back.
