Former federal prosecutor and South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy is reportedly in talks to join President Trump’s legal defense team in their fight against an impeachment inquiry.
BizPac Review reports Gowdy would be hired for his efforts as an outside counsel, although neither party has formalized a decision. According to the report, it is being misreported that Gowdy has already been hired.
Check it out:
NEWS: Trump advisers since late Sept. have weighed the idea of asking former US Rep Trey Gowdy to provide impeachment strategy.
Trump warmed to the suggestion and asked @TGowdySC to be part of team.
Gowdy said yes.
He’ll work from *outside* the White House, sources tell me.

Confirmed, per a senior White House official, who says Trump has blessed the move. Trey Gowdy is on the Trump team. https://t.co/yjhaK8LsOF

UPDATE: @JenniferJJacobs of Bloomberg reports that Trey Gowdy will in fact assist President Trump during the impeachment inquiry; however, his role is not formal and he will consult from outside of the White House.https://t.co/C6NNA6KgNP

According to the report, since Gowdy retired from Congress, he has served as a Fox News contributor and joined the law firm Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP.
“Gowdy’s experience and knowledge of House proceedings would be an asset to the Trump team as they ready for what is likely to be a drawn-out battle with Democrats bent on impeaching the president,” the report adds.
And, per BizPac Review:
The 55-year-old former federal prosecutor served as the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee as well as leading the House Select Committee on Benghazi. During that investigation of the 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya, Gowdy grilled Obama administration officials including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
If Gowdy does, in fact, come on board, it would be at a time that the White House is doubling down on its stand against Democrats, sending a letter Tuesday to three committee leaders and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stating that it would not be complying with requests related to the impeachment inquiry.
Here’s how some people are responding online to the potential hire:
