Jussie Smollett was completely unknown to me before the supposedly racist, homophobic hate-crime hoax he staged a few weeks ago took place. I don’t subscribe to TV, and I don’t even have an antenna to watch local channels, so chances are I would never have known anything about him at all had he gone on with his “normal” life.
Now that he made a spectacle of himself with his made-up claims, I believe he’s probably wishing he’d never gone down that path because it has turned into an expensive dalliance from which I doubt he’ll recover any time soon.
Empire actor Jussie Smollett on Friday was indicted by a grand jury in Chicago on 16 felony counts in connection to an alleged hate crime staged against himself in January.
Once the dust settled, a grand jury put out two separate sets of charges.
The first set was for the reports he gave to officers during the alleged attack. He said the called him homophobic and racial slurs, put a noose around his neck, struck him with their hands, and poured some chemical substance, perhaps bleach, over him.
The second set of charges is related to the second interview he had later in the day when questioned by police about the attack.
Each one of the new charges carries a possible sentence of probation to four years. He had already pleaded not guilty to the first disorderly conduct charge at the time he was taken into custody, after which he posted a $100,000 bond.
The word from experts familiar with the case is that his most likely course of action will be to strike a plea deal, which would improve his chances of avoiding prison time.
